the human puzzle...

we're so caught up in this hopeless endeavor
to solve everything, as if the world was a giant puzzle
and events and people were equations
so predictable, definite, unfaltering.
as if we can define ourselves and each other by a dollar sign in front of a salary,
the reading on a scale,
the likes on a status,
the score on a test.
or the number of scars on our bodies.
and we fail to realize that none of these things have any impact on who we truly are
because people aren't numbers,
or even words on a page
they're the multicolored smudges of pain on a palette,
a thousand different hues.
the vast human experience and one's one timeline exist on different planes
but a cross-section reveals how similar they truly are-
how easily one singular moment, one that spans across continents and cultures, recounts your entire lifespan
everything that has happened and will ever happen
a jumbled cacophony of laughter, cries, and murmurs,
a baby's shriek of joy and an old man's dying breath,
a heartbroken sob of anguish, a triumphant yell
all happening at the same time, somewhere in the world
all the emotions that we have ever felt or will ever feel are being felt by someone, somewhere at this very moment.
our own human experience and the human experience are one and the same-
a swirling mass of emotion, thoughts, and sound inside each of us
where nothing can be picked out
lacking any sense of certainty.
maybe you don't have names for the colors in the sunset that take your breath away
or a genre for the song that sends chills up your spine
or one-word descriptions to organize people, filing them away like bank notices
find solace in the fact that it's okay not to have the answer.
it's more than okay, it's wonderful.
there's a kind of beauty in the unknown
in this grey area we call home.
it's a comfort, knowing that everyone is just muddling through ambiguity,
equally alone, together.
