Petty concerns plague us constantly
From the incessant ringing of 1-800 numbers,
To parking tickets overdue by a fortnight,
To postal stamps on the tiniest of packages.
We are not:
A sharply-dressed clone army of suits and ties,
The recycling overspilling in the wrong bin,
Overpriced products that took pennies on the dollar to make,
Grocery store aisles with their sullied floors,
The stove you forgot to turn off as you dashed out the door,
A box of kitty litter that desperately needs a change,
Traffic on the 405,
The 32 voicemails your angered ex-lover left you,
A phone battery at 4%,
The a-hole who bumped into you and didn’t say sorry,
Delayed mass transit on construction weekends,
The obvious stain on a just-bought prom dress,
3 cents short of exact change,
A five hour wait for a two hour event,
Or the now-cold breakfast you left on the table.
We are:
Astral bodies in a physical plane,
Aspiring scientists, architects, poets,
Veterans of the quotidian,
Denouncers of injustice,
Pioneers of tomorrow,
The building blocks of the next generation,
Role models for the near cycle of humanity to replace us,
And it’s about time we started acting like it.
